This listing is for the whorl only which I have made from Jarrah and Sheoak which make for a nice contrast in colours.. The whorl has a 5 degree taper in the hole so it will fit one of my shafts without having to retain it with a small elastic band or some other device. The shafts and whorls are also balanced so that you are able to use them as a support spindle as well as a drop spindle if you wish to do
This whorl has been finished in my usual manner, that is, it has been turned and sanded down to 600 grit emery paper and then soaked in Tung oil, which is a natural drying oil and when dry, buffed through various compounds down to about 6000 grit and a final buff with carnauba wax. As always I strive to produce a quality item of heirloom quality which will last for many years and be able to be handed on to the next generation.
I use carnauba wax for several reasons, it gives an absolutely beautiful finish which is second to none, another reason is that it will withstand elevated temperatures unlike beeswax which will begin to soften at around body temperature. Another reason is that unlike shellac or french polish it will normally survive the occasional brush with hot liquids such as coffee etc, french polish has a tendency to go a little milky when it comes into contact with liquids, especially hot liquids.
