This shuttle is ideal for use with the Inkle Loom or for card weaving, tablet weaving, for use with the Heddle loom etc. Made from Tasmanian Blackwood they have quite a nice grain pattern with the contrast showing between the sapwood and the heartwood. Tasmanian Blackwood is a cabinet timber "par excellence" and is in great demand for high end furniture, the colour of the heartwood is golden to dark brown and quite often with chocolate growth rings. I have included a couple of photo's showing some Blackwood trees.
I strive to make heirloom quality tools and these shuttles are certainly no exception. The finish is my normal finish, that is sanded down to 600 grit, soaked in Tung oil, which is a natural drying oil and buffed through various grades of compound to 6000 grit and a final buff with carnauba wax to give a high sheen and durability, the Carnauba wax finish will last for many, many years. All of my shuttles are given a nicely bevelled edge.
